  5. Thank-you for purchasing "America's Best Bed & Breakfasts."  We hope
  6. that it will provide you with many hours of enjoyment and help you find
  7. the perfect accommodations.

  9. Installing "America's Best Bed & Breakfasts"
  10.  
  11. The "America's Best Bed & Breakfasts" program runs entirely on the
  12. CD-ROM, requiring no space on your hard disk.  
  13.

  15. For Windows 3.1
  16. ---------------

  18. To automatically create the proper Windows icons, make sure that the 
  19. CD-ROM is in the drive, then run the program:
  20.  
  21.     <CD-ROM drive>:\setup.exe
  22.  
  23. where <CD-ROM drive> is the drive letter of your CD-ROM.
  24.

  26. For Windows 95
  27. --------------
  28.  
  29. "America's Best Bed & Breakfasts" will start automatically when you
  30. insert the disc into the CD-ROM drive.  To start the program again,
  31. simply double click on the CD-ROM icon.  
  32.  
  33. If you prefer, you may follow the Windows 3.1 procedure above to 
  34. create a Harmonic Software program group on the Windows 95 Start menu.
  35.

  37. Exploring "America's Best Bed & Breakfasts"
  38. -------------------------------------------

  40. To run "America's Best Bed & Breakfasts," simply double-click on the
  41. "America's Best Bed & Breakfasts" icon, found in the Harmonic Software
  42. program group.  Be sure to check out these features:
  43.  
  44.     * Read the on-line tutorials in the "Getting Started" section, located
  45.     just a button push away from the main screen.
  46.  
  47.     * In the "Accommodations" section, search through the names, addresses,
  48.     and phone numbers of over 12,400 B&Bs in the "Brief Info" screen, or
  49.     peruse all 461 Bed & Breakfasts in the "Detailed Info" screen.
  50.     "Zoom-in" on the pictures, read the descriptions, check out the sample
  51.     menu, or try your hand at the B&B's favorite recipe.
  52.  
  53.     * Browse all 205 recipes in the "Recipes" section.  Print a few
  54.     favorites or print the entire cookbook.
  55.  
  56.     * Call one of the eight reservation services to get personal assistance
  57.     in selecting your B&B accommodations.  If you want to know more about
  58.     reservation services, call the B&B reservation services trade
  59.     organization described in the "More Info" section off of the
  60.     "Reservation Services" screen.

  63. If You Have Trouble
  64. -------------------
  65.  
  66. "America's Best Bed & Breakfasts" has been tested on a wide range of
  67. computers.  If you have trouble running it on your computer, please try
  68. the following before calling customer support:
  69.  
  70. * Make sure that you can access the CD-ROM from other Windows programs.
  71.  
  72. * Make sure your system meets the minimum requirements:
  73.  
  74.     * 80386SX processor or higher
  75.  
  76.     * Mouse
  77.  
  78.     * CD-ROM
  79.  
  80.     * 6 Mb RAM if Windows Virtual Memory is set to None, or 4 Mb RAM if
  81.       Windows Virtual Memory is set to at least 2Mb.
  82.  
  83.     * MS-DOS version 3.1 or higher (not required for Windows 95)
  84.  
  85.     * Microsoft Windows version 3.1 or higher (including Windows 95)
  86.  
  87.     * VGA or higher-resolution graphics adapter and monitor, capable of 256
  88.       colors at 640x480 resolution.
  89.  
  90. * Edit "C:\CONFIG.SYS" and add the statement, "FILES=40."   Do not type
  91.   the quotes.  If there is already a FILES= statement, make sure that it
  92.   is set to at least 40.  (Not needed for Windows 95)
  93.  
  94. * If you get this message when starting "America's Best Bed &
  95.   Breakfasts,"
  96.  
  97.     "Cannot create program workspace; file access denied."
  98.  
  99.   then you need to set your TEMP environment variable, shown below.
  100.  
  101.     1.  Exit windows and edit the file c:\autoexec.bat from DOS:
  102.  
  103.             C> cd \ 
  104.             C> edit autoexec.bat
  105.  
  106.         and add this line at the top of the autoexec.bat file:
  107.  
  108.             set TEMP=c:\tmp
  109.  
  110.         Delete any other "set TEMP=" lines in your autoexec.bat file.  Save
  111.         the file and exit the editor.
  112.  
  113.     2.  Ensure that the c:\tmp directory exists by typing the following
  114.         at the DOS prompt:
  115.  
  116.             C> cd \
  117.             C> mkdir tmp
  118.  
  119.         It's okay if the system says "Directory already exists."
  120.  
  121.     3.  Reboot your computer and restart windows.
  122.  
  123. * If the program crashes when starting up, try running the alternate 
  124.   version of "America's Best Bed & Breakfasts," by double-clicking the 
  125.   icon, "America's Best B&Bs - Alternate," or run "America's Best Bed 
  126.   & Breakfasts" using the standard Windows display driver, "Super VGA 
  127.   (640x480, 256 colors)."  (See your Windows documentation for more 
  128.   details.)

  130.   If this fixes the problem, contact the manufacturer of your graphics
  131.   adapter to obtain the latest Windows display drivers.  Most
  132.   manufacturers can be reached on Compuserve or America Online.  Explain
  133.   to them that you are having trouble running a Microsoft Foxpro 2.6
  134.   application.
  135.  
  136.   NOTE: The two versions of "America's Best Bed & Breakfasts" are
  137.   functionally identical, differing in only two ways: the alternate
  138.   version uses plain white screen backgrounds, rather than fancier picture
  139.   backgrounds,  and the alternate version displays "zoomed" pictures as
  140.   magnified versions of the smaller size, rather than displaying a larger
  141.   picture.  That is, "zoomed" pictures in the alternate version will look
  142.   blockier than "zoomed" pictures in the normal version.
  143.  
  144.   The alternate version is provided for use with computers that have not
  145.   been updated with Windows drivers suitable for use with Microsoft Foxpro
  146.   2.6.  If your computer works with the alternate version of "America's
  147.   Best Bed & Breakfasts" but not with the normal version, you should
  148.   update your display driver as soon as possible -- these driver problems
  149.   will manifest themselves in other Windows applications and those
  150.   applications will probably not come with an "alternate" version!
  151.  
  152. * If you are using a LANtastic network card and get a memory conflict
  153.   running "America's Best Bed & Breakfasts," try adding the following line
  154.   in the file "system.ini" in your Windows directory:
  155.  
  156.         EMMExclude = D800-DFFF
  157.  
  158.   Add the line directly below the line "[386Enh]" and restart Windows.
  159.  
  160. * If you are using a Paradise graphics card and get a memory conflict
  161.   running "America's Best Bed & Breakfasts," try adding the following line
  162.   in the file "system.ini" in your Windows directory:
  163.  
  164.         EMMExclude = C600-C800
  165.  
  166.   Add the line directly below the line "[386Enh]" and restart Windows.
  167.  
  168. * If you are using QEMM386 and get a memory conflict running "America's
  169.   Best Bed & Breakfasts," try adding the following line in the file
  170.   "system.ini" in your Windows directory:
  171.  
  172.         EMMExclude = C0FF-C7FF
  173.  
  174.   Add the line directly below the line "[386Enh]" and restart Windows.
